This project is a critical project that is based around the superficial nature of Instagram, and how influencers on Instagram prey on women’s insecurities for capitalist gain, self-glorification and self-promotion. After a sharp rise in mental health problems and eating disorders of young women, it is evident that the photo-centric nature of social media channels such as Instagram have had an impact on this. (This was discussed in depth in my dissertation)
Therefore I wanted to create a satirical and critical piece to highlight these truths. I wanted to create a piece that commented on how these influencers that are promoting ‘beauty’ products display their seemingly perfect lives, when in-fact hidden by lots of filters and cosmetic surgery, claiming the products they are promoting are the reason they look the way they do. When in-fact, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Research into some popular influencer brands such as Sugar Bear Hair and Flat Tummy Co. have shown that they don’t actually work and are based on ‘pseudo-science’, they are just preying on the insecurities of women for capitalist gain. |
